Yes, by Jove, I think you've got it!

Aligning layers: reduce the opacity of the one you're moving around so you can see through it to the one beneath. Once you've got it lined up properly, bring the opacity of the top layer back up to 100%. If you hold the shift key while moving a layer or selection, it restrains the movement to only horizontal or vertical.

well if this is photoshop.....you can go to "view/snap/document boungs" and it will snap right too it......

Only if it's a picture the same size, right? I can't imagine it would work when bringing in a selection from another photo, even if it's the same photo. Just because I can't imagine it, however, doesn't mean it can't be done.

well if it is the same size...it will just snap it into place.....if it is smaller it will snap it to the sides...or in a corner....
