Default CHALLENGE: 4/28/04 – 5/4/04 “Close”

Most of us have done close-ups of bugs and flowers, so let’s avoid them this week, instead doing close-ups of things we never thought of photographing before. You don’t need a special lens since anything in our world can be turned into pure design: the edge of a dog’s nose, the curve of a friend’s shoulder, the back end of an elephant.

The trick in doing close-ups is to forget the names of things while you’re photographing them. Fill your frame with line, mass, color, and shade, seeing what your camera sees rather than what your brain says is really there.

Just one rule: Create a design, not a guessing game. Tell us what you’ve photographed if you think it won’t be recognizable.

Ooo, I like this one. I'm something of a macro freak.

What's an acceptable amount to post? IE, how many can I post before I get banned.

If I ban you, I'll have to ban myself. Maybe we should be locked up in a macroholics anonymous institution. With our cameras, of course.

oh man...another fun one!
this will teach us more of looking beyond wat the photo is of to see the colors and lines......(i need some work on that....)
will help see some "S"s in it...which are good for composition....(i think...)

nice job thinking this one up.....

so this is a closeup challenge without flowers or bugs? right?
anything else is fair game?
(i could post my leaf pictures lol)

Yes, Vito, anything but flowers and bugs. The only reason I ruled them out is because they're often the first thought when a person thinks of a macro. Without those two, a bit more searching and thinking can be done.

I wouldn't want anyone here to think that what's at that site is what we're doing here. We're going for concept and composition while that site is playing a game--which is, by the way, a lot of fun to play. It also points out how a close-up can turn an object into nothing more than a design.

Did anyone notice that since the board conversion a number of the messages previously posted have disappeared?
