I think it's assumed that glassmaking grew from the ancient observation that fires built on sand created a hard, glassy substance.

I was raised in an extremely old house where some of the windows were over a hundred years old. Looking through them was like looking at the world through a funhouse mirror.

Be careful. Quite apart form the hardness (or lack thereof) of the glass that your camera's front element is made of, it has multiple layers of extremely thin (atomic level) exotic coatings which are much more susceptible to scratching than the glass lens substrate.

i decided not to risk it....but..i did try my dad's lens.(a 50mm lens for his 35mm minolta..) and neither lenses hit each other....but the DOF is tiny....and it focuses a lot closer..lol
