Just the zip off of a leather camera bag. Reversed 50mm lens. That is one shallow DOF. You can see that some parts of the teeth are out of focus whilst others are in. Even the leather of the bag is out. 40w lamp for lighting, you can see the shadows below the teeth.

Wow! What a great texture. Dumb question - I know vito's also done the reverse lens trick - but how? My SLR won't take a pic without a lens attached, and there's only one way to do that. :-)

You can probably buy an adaptor for your camera with will have a bayonet mount on one side like your lenses and a thread on the other to allow you to screw on a reversed lens using the filter thread on the lens. Or you can buy an adapter which will have a thread (or threads) which you can screw onto the end of a lens which is on your camera and screw a reversed lens onto the adaptor. Or, you can use tape.

Very cool looking shot!

I like the difference in the textures displayed also. Has a primitive look to it.

Very creative.

Aaah - so the reverse lens goes on in ADDITION to a regular lens - I thought it was in PLACE of any other lens. That's why I was confused! :-)

It can be used both ways.
If you stick it on the end of a big zoom you can get in very close. The reversed lens allows you to focus nearer, the zoom erm, zooms in. :-)
If you use it without the zoom you get close, but no zoom.
