You can get a handheld shot if your timing is just right, but all you get is the burstwith no interesting background.

This shot taken with my Z1 at 38mm F/L (35 mm equiv), ASA 200, F 3.2, 1/15 sec.

Next year I'll take a tripod and see if I can do better.

The secret is TAKE A LOT OF PICTURES. You'll get lucky eventually. I took 20 or so and maybe got5 fairly good ones. The beauty of digital photography is no film to buy and instant feedback on how you did. Also, you'll notice this oneused a small focal length of 38 mm. It's easier tohold steady that way.Even so I got a few "wiggly" shots. Fireworks are quite bright and you don't need a long exposure time to capture the burst but you do need to set off the exposure atthe right time because they fade quickly.A long exposure gives you the entire trail from launch to burst plus some background to make the picture interesting as shots by Brtsergio, Vito, and a couple of others here so well illustrate.

Edited for spelling. I can't type. The letters on my keyboard keep moving around on me!
