Nice photo...

I once spoke with a "Thud" driver.

He told me the story of seeing Senator John McCain in the Capitol Building.

Just after they passed each other, the "Thud" driver said,

"Check Six."

According to his story, John McCain whirled around and asked,

"Are you a pilot?!"

They then conversed for a few minutes as only aviators do.

:-)

your title was interesting... 'widow maker' ... the F-104 earned that name in it's "G" configuration when being flown by the Luftwaffe in the mid-60's. Everyone else - the Swiss, Japanese, Italians - managed to master the plane, but the Germans had problems with it. The US, sadly, only flew it as an "active" USAF interceptor for a couple of years before relegating it to the reserve squadrons... it's an amazing airplane!
