I converted the photo to "negative" mode and deleted the background (rather crudely, as you can see). But in preparing this, I discovered that an extreme closeup on a canteloupe, plus a little tweaking of the photo creates a really cool "stained glass" effect! :G

It actually looks like one of those infra-red images of the sun.

Think it really works as an abstract, I wouldn't be wondering what it was, I'd just accept it as a textural/abstract image.
