julie! this is awesome!

the composition rocks!

i agree, partly, with it needing more contrast...

it could use some..but only on the head/beak/background...not the body, and eye...

this is beautiful, and should be on the wall!

Thanks for the replies, I had never used the channel mixer to convert to black and white, only desaturate, it makes a difference. Problem is, Im not sure how to get the original look of black and white film and what settings to apply to the colorchannels, I try to remember the effect of B/W film photos from my childhood but It's hard.
