I was out shooting today in downtown Portland, OR and in the Pearl District which is a reclaimed industrial area that has been converted into upscale condos and lofts. The two shots below are different crops of the same tree in front of the Multnomah County Library in downtown. The first shot is a close in crop of the lower part of the tree. The second shows most of the tree. The first shot is actually cropped from the second. Compare the lamp post at the bottom of both pictures. Even though both crops are crops of the same image, they convey quite different impressions about the tree.

Nikon D100, Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 lens, hand-held.

The green is fabulous. For a different perspective I used an old pre-PS trick. Took a piece of paper and covered the bottom of your photo effectively covering the lamp posts. Try it and see what happens. Another perspective.

Just scrolling did the trick for me: those lamps are an integral part of the composition in both crops. I really, really like this picture with its juxtapostioning of manmade and nature-made. In particular, I like the closer view, probably because the lamps stand out more.

Hi Cal,

I like the wild abandon of the tree branches, & the formality of the lights emphasise itnicely.

I enjoyed the different viewpoints too - it's so helpful to see the alternatives.

Best wishes,

Canna.
