This is know by the locals as the Interstate Bridge. It is actually two identical bridges side-by-side carrying Interstate 5 accross the Columbia River between Portland, OR and Vancouver, WA. One bridge carries Northbound traffic and the other carries Southbound trafic. I was shooting pictures on the Vancouver side of the river when I heard the warning bells and siren sound. I turned just in time to see both lift spans rising to allow a small sailboat to pass.

Nikon D100, Sigma 18-35 zoom.

Very interesting.... I've personally never seen a bridge which operates this way.

There are many of this type of lift bridge in the USA. There are at least four of them in the Portland, OR metropolitin area. There is one called the "Steel Bridge" which has a double-deck lift span. The lower deck is for trains, only, and the upper deck is for vehicles. The lower deck can be raised independently of the upper deck, thus allowing it to be raised without disrupting vehicular traffic. If a really large ship needs to pass, both decks are raised simultaneously. I think I have a picture of it. I'll try to locate it and post it.
