Went out last night and shot some pix of a place about two blocks down. There may be a few more, but this is the only one I've had time to prepare.

I shot at ISO 100 and f/8. Shutter speed varied mostly between 1/4 and 1/2 sec. I found that I had to use an exposure compensation of at least -1 EV or really start blowing the lights.

This shot also got some local dodging on the lightness channel in LAB mode with PS 7.

They say that you have to suffer for your art. Well, it was 18 degrees that night; so, like it or not, I guess this must be art!

Great job in both cases! The scene with the reindeer is well done!

I think your timing is superb and exposure right on target.

The rest of my shots are done.

Most of these are composits of two different exposures in an attempt to get some background without blowing the lights!

Hey! This is one you've been lookin' for!

Why this many in the series? Quite simply, because I froze my hiney off taking them, and by all that's holy, you're ding-dang gonna see 'em!

Grant,

That's an impressive set of photos. I would say that by dang we got to see them.

In all seriousness, they are well done and whoever had the patience to put these displays up should get a hearty thank you.

I am curious about the first two shots. The background really bothers me. At first, I thought it was some serious digital noise but you said you shot at ISO100. There should be no noise at that ISO. Please explain what happened in the background.

Your last group of shots are outstanding!

Cal, what you are asking about is the result of heavy dodging on the lightness channel in LAB mode. The shots just didn't seem very interesting to me with all that dead black background in the upper third of the frame, so, before I just cropped the pix, I wanted to see what would happen if I brought out the tree branches hidden in the gloom.

I thought it looked kind of cool, although the "look" might be more appropriate for Halloween than Christmas. Anyway, I liked the effect better than cropping out the area.

The color saturation was also boosted on all these shots without affecting the luminence by using curves on the "A" and "B" channels in LAB mode.
