This is in my home town, and it is for real! The house was built in the mid 1800's by a rather eccentric fellow. the facilities came about because the master bedroom was on the second floor and he didn't want to have to go downstairs when nature called in the middle of the night.

The grounds now belong to the historical society and is open to the public on summer weekends.

I've seen other examples of the two-story outhouse. I think the funniest had signs above the doors. The sign on the bottom door said "enlisted men" while the sign on the top door said "officers". Anyone who's been in the military will understand this.

This is the first example of an outhouse being attached to the main house. That's real handy.

Not having been in the armed forces I had to think and think about the "enlisted" men sidebar... Then it came to me.

I hope there's no fan at the bottom otherwise...

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Ah, now that I wiped up the Coke I snorted out my nose . :-)

The top and bottom are offset inside so that both levels are, ahem, functional.

The "skyway" to the top level connects to the house just outside the master bedroom.
