Here is a shot of Sawyer Glacier in Southeast Alaska. This is a very large glacier that splits into two parts that flow around a hill. This is the view to the right as you are moving into the bay called Tracy Arm. This was taken from the bow of the Norwegian Sky, a cruise ship doing the Alaska circuit. The captain said that normally they get in much closer but there was too much ice floating in the water and it wasn't safe.

The blue color is real. Over time as the glacier flows, the ice becomes super dense and it changes the optical characteristics and yields this blue color.

Scanned 35mm negative.

Wow! This is really an awesome shot with the many colors especially the deep blue of the ice.

Well done!

I hear Alaska is a photographer's paradise...looking at this image certainly proves it!! That ice is phenomenal and you've shown it off well...I like the way the ice is framed by rock. With the 'C' curve in the rock on the right, it helps in leading your eyes into the ice to study it and that's exactly where I assume you wanted your viewers to look. Good job Cal!

Very interesting (and beautiful) shot, Cal. When I first looked at this picture, the white rock gave me the impression of water running down toward the upper part of the picture (as if you had taken the shot from above). Then I moved my eyes downward and saw the real water. Very cool!
