I am planning to buy canon rebel XTI somewhere online. I am not sure if I need to go for extended warranty or not? What do you guys suggest? By the way I just have a point and shoot camera now and new to DSLR. Any suggestions are appreciated.Thanks.

If you are a rough camera handler like me, you need extended warrantee. I bought a 2yrs warranty at Circuit City, I take the camera to the extreme, into the mud, the dust, the hot desert. Buy at a well known online store like B&H, avoid unknown vendor. Basically all Canon dslr are built to outlast others, you can trace back all the way to the Canon F1 and A1 film cameras, incredible shutter reliability. I believe you can get a good deal at this time lower price than when I bought my XTI.If you canuse that extra money savedfora two yrswarranty you are ahead of the game to protect the sensor, the heart of any dslr. One year manufacturing warranty passes real quick. If you use the camera normally like general family pictures then there's no need for extra warranty.

for most instances I would say to avoid it. You are gambling against a mechanical/electronic failure NOT against you damaging the product. Dropping or damaginga camera is not usually covered by warranty - you need insurance for that. The extended warranties are just pure moneymakers for the the sellers.

Just my opinion - others may differ.

I agree with John G.

Just go buy the camera and don't worry about extended warranties or insurance.

Your best insurance is to make sure you have camera strap around your neck when handling your camera.

Thank you all for your reply. I think I won't go for the extended warranty now.
