I am looking to buy a refurb Rebel XTI and want to be able to check to see if any pics have been taken with the camera.

Is there a menu which tells me to total number of pics that have been taken?

except canon..no one knows how to exactly tell the number of actuations unless a single CF card (new) was used from Day 1.

The feature is available only for 1D series camera.

Makes me wonder how much(effort, cost, resource)does it take to just add the file numbers in the exif as in 1d series.

I would be wary of a refurb XTi, because the shutter is rated for something like 60,000 cycles, and these cams are turned in for refurb when they get marginally near that. Since you're obviously looking for a price, consider the older 350 XT, new. Still available, and the test sites show us that IQ is maybe a little better than the XTi. Resolution diff is only 350 pixels on the long side, which doesn't mean much. Lens and accessory selection is the same. I say buy it, and then don't worry about what you didn't get, but enjoy the use of what you have.
