Default Digital Rebel and Vivitar 730AF Flash

I was looking for an external flash, and saw the 730AF. The "expert" at the photo shop said I would be very disappointed with it, and recommended the Canon 420, at twice the price. He said that the Vivitar would work with the 300D, but very very poorly.
Now I realize, that it would be best to use a Canon flash with a Canon camera, but could the Vivitar 730AF that claims to be a dedicated flash be "that bad"?
Has anyone used this combination?

you must use a canon E-TTL EX series type strobe for full compatibility. sigma makes a E-TTL EX compatible strobe. even a canon EZ strobe will not sync properly with their digital cameras.

http://www.sigmaphoto.com/html/flashes.htm Canon E-TTL compatible

i just looked up the vivitar strobe it only says canon AF. it says nothing about the digital compatability and yes there is a big difference.

actually your dealers expert should have said incompatible rather then disappointing.

Default I have a question...

What kind of photo shop was this "expert' working for?
