Default XSi and SDHC Card Type

Just bought an XSi and it states it support SDHC cards but not the maximum class. Does anyone know if it will support class 10 cards or only class 6?

I am looking at Sandisk Extreme III 4GB card currently but it is a class 10 and no where in the manual does it state anything about this.

The Class designations are just a standardized way to indicate the speed of the card. At the time the XSi was introduced, there was no Class 10 designation (even though some cards would have qualified as Class 10 because they were able to support 10MB/Second write speeds using the test criteria for Class designations). IOW, the Class designation should not impact card compatibility. Chances are, many of the same cards that were designated as Class 6 before are now labeled as Class 10 (even though the cards didn't change internally).

However, you may or may not see any difference in performance using a faster card, as the camera is often the bottleneck. IOW, you may buy a card that's twice as fast and only see a small increase in performance because the camera is not capable of processing and writing the data to the memory card any faster.

Rob Galbraith has some tests of various cards here. But, he hasn't updated the XSi tests since April 2008 (so, it doesn't include newer cards):
