just bought a canon t1i with a EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. any suggestions for telephoto lens or flash?

on a budget, i would grab the Canon 55-250 f4-5.6 IS. its relatively cheap ~250USD, but the optics are good and the IS works quite well. build quality isn't great, but its nothing of concern really. and it marries well with the kit lens.
if you can spend more the Canon 70-300 f4-5.6 IS ~550USD is a great tele with better build quality and faster AF, and covers more range. its quite a bit more expensive, but still a good value, given its optical performance. as for flash, i would go with the Canon 430 EX II ~250USD |

thanks for the recommendations. since i'm a beginner and on a budget i'll probably go for the Canon 55-250 f4-5.6 IS.
