Default Ti1 and Starry Night Photo

Am a new T1i owner (1 week), new to the dSLR world moving from P&S. I am looking for guidance on shooting starry night picture especially this week with Perseid meteor showers.

I tried in Auto last night but the camera was unable to focus and would not let me click any pics. The only way I could force the camera was to do it in Manual mode. Not sure what I was doing wrong there.

Any guidance on how to take starry night would be helpful.

My attempts at this tell me that you should probably go to manual focus (infinity) and set to a bulb shutter and use a tripod.
