Agree with Mark2009 on this one. If you can't get longer glass and still want to do the best you can with what you have get that shutter speed up around 1/400 (to minimize effects of camera shake) in AV mode and adjust ISO to get good exposure. The other thing I do is use the back button focus to focus on the subject then recompose and shoot without refocusing.
