Default rebel xsi vs 50d vs 4od

need some advice
presently own an xsi
thinking of trading in for a 50d or even a 40d
some good deals on some used 40d's
and sometimes my camera dealer is even able to get some used 50d's
any thoughts
how high on iso can you go on the 50d and still maintain good image quality

There isnt much ISO quality difference between the 40D and the 50D. The 50D was released not long after the 40D, like a few months. ISO is useable to about 1600, anything past that is getting really noisey. I have owned both and still have the 50D.

Going to a 40D you take a step back in MP and gain a prosumer magnesium alloy body and a few other perks but no major changes in technology. The 50D will boost up you MP to 15 and has a faster processor. You will see a significant change with the 50D IMO.

Look to other sources than your local dealer. You have to remember they are in it to make money. Many online photo communities with Buy and Sell sections.
