Default Looking at some of barbados' portraits, i must ask "how

I went here because of another thread in the Canon Lenses topic area, and I saw some of Barbados' portraits... Is there a secret to getting image with that type of quality? The colors look so pure and smooth, yet the lines and hair on the peoples faces is sharp and defined. What type of lens do you use for this type of thing, a zoom lens? 28-135 on the 135 side, for instance? And how about lighting? Some of it looks natural, but some looks like a flash was used... If so, what type of flash, and how was the flash positioned?

Ok, thats enough questions I think. I love the pictures

Thanks for any help or advice...
