Default Cr2 & dng

I have the Adobe DNG coverter.
What is up with these DNG files?
They seem a little smaller in size than the CR2 raw files......but you cannot preview them in windows explorer like a jpeg.

So I guess my question is what is the advantage of creating DNG files from my CR2 files?

I have ...Lightroom 4....Elements 9....and Photoshop CS2....and i use all Canon equipment.

Thanks to anyone who can answer my questions.

A DNG file is supposed to be a "generic" raw file rather than a system proprietary file. If your editing software reads CR2 files there is no benefit whatsoever to converting it to DNG first.
