Since 20D has excellent high ISO performance, I don't see that I really need fast lens like f/2.8 because they're like 2x-4x more than f/4 version. These are Non-IS lenses:

70-200/2.8L $1140
70-200/4L $ $580

300/2.8L $2800-$3200 (used)
300/4L $550-$800 (used)

Shooting at high ISO with slower lens and save me plenty of money.

What am I missing from not using faster lens here?

So long as the lenses are all high quality glass, all the faster F2.8 lens gets you is an extra stop of light, and the ability to get a slightly shallower depth of field using f2.8.

Depending on what you are shooting this may or may not be important. So you need to decide if your shooting preference would benefit from the much more expensive lens.
That 300 F2.8 is a nice lens. You might also consider the 200 F2.8 and a 1.4 TC. That combination gives you both at 200 F2.8 and a 280 F4 :-)
