Any recommendations for a good basic flash that I can use for better lighting for portraits and the like? I used my friends 580ex last night and I loved it but its a steep 450 bucks or so... are the lower end speedlights that dont tilt/rotate worth the $ or am I better off just sticking with the internal flash?

I would recommend the Sigma EF-500 DG Super, it can be had for $200 and has around the power and features of the 550EX. It's not exactly a starter flash, but you'll grow into it and it is well worth the cost.
