I changed focus screen to EcB and tried the outdoor test again. Sure enough, while the image in the view finder is optimally focused either manually or using auto-focus, the image captured is still blurry. Seems something has shaken loose inside my 1D - something you might want to check for, too.

So its back to Canon - again.

I think I'm going to rent a 1Ds mk 2 for a week or two and wear down a few batteries before I buy one. Just to ensure it doesn't act like this...

Also - here's a sample of what I am seeing on my 1D mk 2 and my D60...
