A question for someone new to dSLR.

I took a few pictures of my daughter's confirmation party in a restaurant. The lighting was pretty good, lots of spotlights and windows. I used the Canon 20D along with the Canon EF-S 17-85mm IS USM lens and Canon 580EX external flash. The 20D was set to "P", ISO was set to 200 and I used Auto White Balance. After printing, I noticed that the pictures were on the yellow side and dim for background and lighting but my daughter's dress was white. If not the white balance (due to the white dress) what went wrong with my pics?

It's must come from the 'ambient' light - When a flash is detected the camera biais the WB accordingly...

If there was a lot of tungsten lighting it would make the pics a little yellow. Especially if you were shooting on P and the ambient lighting was good since the flash would go to fill. This would give a lot more weight to the ambient light. If you had been set on M then it would not have been fill and the white balance would probably have been better. You also should keep an eye on the histogram to assure good exposure since the 20D seems to need some + flash compensation.

Also, depending on the size of the room, you may need to bump ISO up to about 800 to get the background to light up well with flash.

You can probably fix them up in a jiffy with an editing program like Picassa. Free from Google! Or of course one of the Photoshop products...
