This lens would be a general purpose "walk around lens".

Where it would be weak is on the wide end, as 28mm is a little less favorable than 17 or 18mm on the wide angle end.

However, it has more "reach" at the telephoto lens with the 135mm at the telephoto end.

$419 sounds like a lot for this lens.

You might want to check out the Canon 17-85 IS which sells for $514 at B&H photo video.

For the extra $100, your getting a much your useful lens.

I find that it is a good "party" lens.
It is weak on the wide end (like Terry said) but it isn't bad for doing across the room shots. I've used it at birthday parties to get portraits... it does that well.

On the other hand, when I tried to use it for fall trees it wasn't wide enough. So I got the 17-40 f4. It is an expensive lens, but a good one.

I'm not saying this to recommend that lens to you (it might be more than you need) I'm just saying that what Terry says is true. The long end isn't bad and is handy for that. But the wide end isn't very wide.

Price is about the same as B&H. My brother has several of these and uses it as a walk around lens. They are very opticaly sharp and good all around lens, but does not go very wide. perhaps pair it with a 10-22 or 12-24 and you might be good. for every thing except for a very long lens.I am thinking about going that way. Costco is a mixed bag on something like this. They take returns for life so it will basicly have a lifetime warrentee, but you will not get any support from the store.

Instead of this lens, I'd go with a Sigma 18-200mm lens as a general purpose walk around lens.
