Yes, that picture was taken from a window seat. The doors usually have smaller windows and are no good for taking pictures. Plus the flight attendants will probably not like it when you hang around the door inflight. My recommendation is to clean the window before you take pictures. They usually get very dirty and greasy on the inside.

I did not use any exposure compensation. It was pretty bright there. I brightenend the wing and engine up a little bit in Photoshop. Otherwise it's pretty much the way I took it. A wide angle helps a lot, especially if you sit near the wing. If you fly during sunrise or sunset you may be able to get some great pics!

I have both.

The 17-85 is a very nice standard lens, and will probably handle about 80% of everyday photography.

The 10-22 is a superb wide angle, with excellent L-equivalent performance. However, it is a bit specialized, and it will not be sufficient as your sole lens.
