Default 70-200 f/4 or 200mm prim f/2.8?

Help I have $600 burning a hole in my pocket. I have a sig 15-30 and a canon 28-135 was thinking on the 70-200 f/4 but if I already have the 28-135 would I be better off to just go with the 200 prim f/2.8 both about same price? advantages disadvantages?

all opinions appreciated.

May I suggest the Sigma 70-200mm constant f2.8... then you can have your cake and eat it too! ( ~$650). It's HSM, ie ultrasonic with all its quickness and quiet benefit as well as the manual focusing overide! 8)

... Then we'll have the same set of lenses except for the 15-30mm, I have the Sigma 17-35mm instead for the same HSM benefit (and slight f2.8 aperture!)

BTW the 70-135mm overlaping with f2.8 is a bit better than f5.6... especially when a few filters are involved :P

You could also compare the measured performance of the lenses on this site..

I have the 70-200 f4L and find it to be razor sharp, especially at around f8 where many lenses are optimum (trade off stopping down for reducing lens aborrations and introducing diffraction effect from small aperture, I believe)

If you need the f2.8 speed, suggest look at link above, then decide if performance benefit of prime 200 at f2.8 over sigma 70-200 at 200 f2.8 compensates for missing out effectively on 135 to 200 range.

Good luck with your choice. (Nice to have some spare spending money!! )
