Because I couldn't afford a nice long Lens in the L glass. I like this one I just bought, I will post some pics today on the wildife forum. It is shorter but I have moved my feeders to just outside my window and if I am careful can snag some birds. It looks like between the the cost and heft of a really nice long lens I will stick with the one I have now and add a converter. The quality of this lens is so much better than the borrowed 70-300mm, that I can crop them to fill the frame. I did see one lens that was compact, light and long and it cost over 5,000.00. I am satisfied with what I now have. donna
