Do a Google search for dofcalc. There are several free charts, programs available that will help you figure out the range of reasonable focus for various lenses at various aperture settings. The DOF camera setting is a quick way to get reasonable DOF, but you will never know how much DOF you really have for the shot.

With the freebie programs, you can run a range of stops on your favorite length lens, and see the relationship between aperture and DOF in feet and inches (or meters).

Puting that info into practice a few times will allow you to look at a group shot, and confidently choose the best target aperture for the DOF you require.
