Default Typical Cost Range for Repairing a Lens?

My 28-135 IS has an intermitant problem with the IS. I have no experience at all in sending lenses in to Canon for repair and have no idea what cost range I might expect. I called Canon, and they were absolutely no help. I would have to send it in for any kind of price estimate.

Does anybody here have any data points to share? I mean is it one of those things where you are almost better off just buying a new lens and forgetting about the old one, or is it fairly reasonable?

As to the problem I am seeing with my lens, occasionally while the IS is running, it starts resonating. When it does this it both vibrates and makes more noise. It only does so about 10% of the time, but is kind of annoying.

Thanks, I appreciate any feedback.
