I'm going to look at a second hand 500mm canon lens and was wondered if anyone could tell me what to look for to check that it's a genuine canon one or any other checks that you can think of.

You should check the <a href="http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/eosfaq/DATECODE.HTM>date code</a> . If you are checking the lens in person, look for marks on the body, and especially the lens. Look for dust or mold inside the lens. Dust may not be a problem, but mold only gets worse. Check to see if it stops down properly, and focuses quickly. Take a few shots, (at different f-stops), and see if it's sharp. The seller should not mind if you check the images on your monitor for IQ before buying - even used they are a ton of $$$. If you have editing software on a laptop, take it with you.
Others will chime in if I've forgotten anthing, and good luck ~ Ron
