Default Digital Rebel-Markings on 18-55mm lens

This is my first SLR camera - I've used a Nikon 950 up 'til now. Being new to the use of detachable lenses... what do the markings on the EF-S 18-55mm lens barrel stand for? I mean the 'sideways flag' next to the 18 and the 'dot' after the 24.

Not totally sure, but here's what I think.

Seems the 'sideways flag' next to the 18 is the end-stop point. Notice it doesn't go to the '18', it stops turning at the 'sideways flag'.

I think the dot is the recommended storage position. The lens is at it's smallest size, fully retracted, when the zoom is set at the dot.

Anyone know for sure if these are what the markings are for?
