Default 100mm macro EF non-USM vs USM

I did a macro workshop with Wild Arena this week and am now considering buying a macro lens. The one I used in the workshop was a canon 100mm Marco F USM and it was fantastic, but it's 420!

I have found a non-USM version second hand for 180.

How do they compare, is the USM worth an additional 240?

First, see if you can try the lens to make sure it works and produces sharp images. If you are satisfied, you may want to buy it. Will you be happy with manual focus only - most macro shooters focus manually anyway, but if you want to use the lens for other subjects, manual focus may not work well unless you have a stationary subject.
Edit to add that I just re-read your post. It may just be an older verion of auto fucus. That means that it probably won't focus quite as fast as USM, but shouldn't be a problem unless you have a fast moving subject.
