I bought the 50mm f1.8 and gave it a try on vacation. I am impressed with the lens - sharp and allows for available-light shooting under lower light conditions. On my APS-C camera however, it turns into an 80mm lens, offering a little too much zoom for many of the shots I wanted to take. This isn't an indictment of the lens rather commentary on its suitability for my purposes.

It should be perfect for video use at school at this focal range.
