I think I'd use a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens to get as large an apperture, and therefore, as fast a shutter speed without setting the ISO too high, as I could. Sigma's 70-200/2.8 HSM sells for $799, while Canons 70-200/2.8 USM sells for $1189. But suprisingly, for 2 weeks, LensRentals rents the Canon for $97 and the Sigma for $105.

I presume that you won't be very far away from the action. If you need somethign longer, that will be a lot more expensive.
