Default Canon lens help!

I work for a ritz camera, and i have a customer with a digital rebel.
He has a 100-300 canon f 4-5.6 usm lens, and when it is at 300 and he points the camera towards a bright light source and presses the shutter button, it gives him " error 99".
I have not been able to find any information regarding this, and the lens works fine on other canon slr's. His rebel also does not do this with any other canon lens (we have tried about a dozen).
Please help!
