Good points about catastrophic, mirror lenses.
  • They are incredibly cheap
Under 130$us for the 500mm f/5.6 (90$ for the vivitar brand!)
and under 170$us for the 800mm f/8 version
check the available lineup of cheap mirror lenses at b&H
(also take time to read the reviews from the people that have bought them there)
  • The are very light weight.
  • They fit any camera that you can find a t-thread adapter for.

Bad points.
  • Fixed unchangeable aperture
  • Manual focus
  • Horrendous donuts shaped bokeh
I remember trying them out way back in the 1970 back when I was a broke student.

Many of these lenses have 1 other difficulty, the focusing is very fiddley not so easy to get things in focus quickly.
But they can work out if you are looking for bargain basement priced gear!

Imaging is all about light and your ability to sculpt it.
Equipment is just a secondary nuisance.

Catadioptric lenses also have fewer polished surfaces so they tend to be sharp, and there's little refracting going on so they tend to have little chromatic aberration.
  • The lens is the thing.
  • 'Full Frame' is the new 'Medium Format'.
