Can anyone recommend this lens to learn with my new 20D? Any other suggestions Sigma, Tamron? I guess I dont care to much abouta long zoom for now, but I do want full-time manual and I will be walking around most of the time. My limit is $300 since I just want a learning lens.

Thank You

Well, is the wide end of that lens wide enough for what you want to shoot?

If I were to need to buy a lens in that price range today I'd go with the 24-85 & get that extra 4mm at the wide end instead of the 20mm extra tele reach of the 28-105. 24mm is equivalent to 35mm on a film camera- my favorite focal length. The 28mm "wide" end of the 28-105 will be like having close to a normal lens (44mm), so you'll be finding yourself next wanting to purchase a wider lens. Maybe sooner than you want to be buying another lens of any type.
