i hate to be annoying, but i need some help. can anyone refer me to some some good sources of information on focal length and aperture application? i'm about to purchase my first SLR, and want to be able to look at a lens' focal length and aperture rating and know what the hell it can be used for.

it all goes over my head right now. any books and/or websites that could explain this to me? any help will be greatly appreciated.
