If you want just one lens then get the 17-85.

I was going to get the 17-85IS for my Rebel XT. But went with a Sigma 18-200mm, and loving it.....Saved myself $250.

I considered this lens, but I figured that I started with the inexpensive kit lens. I added a Canon 70-200 2.8 and then I got the Canon EFS 10-22. At some point, I'll get something to replace the EFS 18-55, but its very servicable for right now and I feel like I have a decent kit that covers tourist lens (10-22) portrait (70-200) and one just to use for knocking around (18-55).

I also have an old Canon EF 35-135 lens which is mediocre, but not bad for outdoor use, and the original EF 50 f1.8.

I do want something in the 24-70 f2.8 range, but I want to do some shopping on the one for a while, not to mention that I just bought the 20D, and the other two lenses, so I'm tapped out for the time being.
