I know I am splitting hairs here, but was hoping for your thoughts on these lenses.

I plan to upgrade most of my glass to "L" series, with the exception of my Tokina 12-24mm, which for the foreseeable future I plan to keep.

So, do I go with the faster lens since the 70-200 covers the gap anyway, or is the extended range of the 24-135 plus having the IS a big enough bonus?

Then, as for the 70-200mm f/2.8L, is the IS worth the extra $500? For those of you who have worked with the lens without IS, have there been many times you wished you had that little extra benefit, one that jacks up the price by almost 50%?

Finally, for my trip to Alaska this summer, do I rent the 400 f/5.6L for $115 for three weeks, or buy the Tamron 200-500mm zoom? I am working with a 20D and Digital Rebel XT.

Oh, and don't tell my wife about this thread and my plans!
