I have recently bought a Sigma 70-300 APO DG for my 350D (XT). Are there any practical tests you can do on this lens (or other), to assess if they are working ok, or is it just a matter of going out there, shooting, and judging the results for yourself? The reason I'm asking is that I have 30 days in which to return the lens if I am not satisfied with it. Thanks.

My advice: just go ther and shoot with as many different as possible settings and check picture quality and lens operation by your self. One of the tests you can do is how well it focuses, speed and is there any backfokusing issues (measuring tape test or similar).
