Default rant: canon a70

need to vent...

so i was looking to buy a digital camera. the a70 popped up at the top of the list. i remember my first impression of it when i saw it at best buy was that it seemed a little "flimsy" with it's plastic casing. reading reviews, i was worried about the amount of posts of problems experienced with the a70. but considering the amount of people that owned the a70, it was like less than 1 percent of the owners that experienced any serious problems with their camera. what were the odds it would happen to me? so i buy the last a70 i could find ANYWHERE in my area... gee i hope it isn't part of the 1% that is defective. great little camera, takes good pictures. so, two weeks after purchasing it, i'm using it and zooming in 3x optical when i hear a loud "POP" come from inside the camera. sounds really bad... but the a70 seems to be ok, everything was still working. not wanting to take chances, i go back to the store and ask to replace it, since i'm still under the 30 day policy. they say they'll have it in stock in 2-3 weeks. soooo.... a week later, it finally dies on me. turning it off, the lens doesn't fully retract. turning it back on, it tries to start up... and fails. i try a couple more times, replacing the batteries... still it can't start up. i start getting a E18 display on a black screen and the three beeps. i was expecting this since the pop, but still... CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!! Now i have no camera, and still 2 to 3 weeks before the a70 might be "possibly" in stock. As with all consumer products, there's a small chance that the product you receive doesn't work or is defective out of the box. usually less than 1% chance it could happen to you. But dammit, it really sucks when YOU'RE in that 1% of people who recieve a defective product... no a70 for several weeks, and 4th of July this weekend... sigh. i still think it's a great camera, but if this happens again...

ok, feel a little better now :?

My second one has been fine now

you better go to best buy and get in writing that they will accept the return when stock comes in.

I had the exact same problem (E18 message and all) with the display model (one of 3 available in the entire country) I purchased from a Duty Free store in Cairns, Australia after less than a week. I thought maybe it had something to do with being used in the underwater case, but I guess not! Fortunately, the A70 I'd ordered four weeks prior at another store came in two days later, so I just returned the broken one and bought a new one at the other store.
