I have recently purchased a G9 for carry and would like to concentrate on closeup work. I am not sure if a macro attachment will increase the distance that I may shoot my subjects. If anyone could explain how and what they do I would be indebted and much better informed. Thanks. Schmally (newbie)

It will depend on the macro lens(es) you purchase, but you might want to visit this site to read the various options available. Scroll down a bit to get to the Macro lenses they make for the G9/G7.

This site shows more samples using various brands of macro lenses for the G9/G7.

You must purchase an adaptor tube first, and then perhaps more adaptor rings to allow various lenses to be used on the camera. Here's some more info on options;
