Would someone have an insight into how the sharpness settings work (in the custom color section of the SDxxx specifically SD850)

1. More specifically, if I increase the sharpness, is the camera then doing less of something else such as noise removal, or is it doing more of something such as post processing edge enhancement?

2. If I don't want to do any custom color as well and turn custom colors off, does the sharpness adjustment cease?

*Edge enhancement as I see it: Dark pixels up against light pixels are made a tad darker and light pixels up against dark pixels are made a tad lighter. This gives the illusion of more sharpness. If done in the wrong parts of the picture it detracts from picture quality.
