Default New A80 user

Just bought an A80

Being a newbie to picture taking...

I see a lot of people taking beautiful scenic shots using low light. Do people carry tripods with them to avoid camera shake at slow shutter speeds? If no, what settings do you use to make them come out so nice?

Also, the camera can manually white balance. Is this something thats really needed to take good pics? Should I be carrying a little white card with me?
