Default Baby chicks captured with my A540

I'm kinda looking for advice on improving my shots during this documentary i'm doing photographing 4 baby robins in a nest outside my back door. I've been using the "Portrait" setting on my A540, and been getting ok to sub-par results. I've included two of the better images.
My question is, is it possible to improve the quality of the shots by using different settings, adjustments, etc? As it is right now, i'm climbing a stepladder and having to hold the camera above and away from me in order to get the shots i've been getting. Thanks to anyone who responds.
